What is a Resin Ring?

There are many theories about why resin rings form on a joint, blunt, or spliff, but the reality of why they form may be a bit different from what we’ve been told.

Some say that resin is a sign of good bud, but I think rings appear in part due to the genetics of a strain. There seems to be other factors involved like holding a joint downwards where the smoke rises up towards your hand, which will eventually produce some resin that forms a ring. But there are many tests that have shown these rings of resin can form just by holding a spliff in regular fashion while smoking.

The joint on the left pictured with a resin ring was rolled with the bud shown to the right of it. I had over two ounces of this beautiful orange flavored weed, and every time I smoked a joint of it, there was always a prominent ring of resin that followed the burn.

It was great, and this was some of the most memorable herb I’ve smoke in a while. It was all I smoked when I had it. There was no need for a change in two ounces of smoke, and to me, that’s great bud, because I usually enjoy variety, but this was some very satisfying herb. The flavor, high, smell, taste, and that undeniable ring of resin that formed were just top notch to me.

But there was one thing I did notice. This cannabis was almost perfectly cured. It made me wonder if the curing process also has something to do with creating the rings.

Just as purple weed doesn’t indicate if it’s going to taste good, or deliver a good high, I find that resin rings don’t dictate the quality of an herb. Like many types of purple weed, joints that produce resin rings could be more of an aesthetic attribute instead of an indicator of quality.

I think more research needs to be done in this direction to find out some of the factors that may be necessary to produce what we are seeing. But regardless of what people may think, the resin rings created by smoking this bud made my experience all the more enjoyable.
