Indica vs sativa vs hybrid: how to actually choose

Herbology NYC · September 2026 · 4 min read

Most people walk in asking for indica or sativa and walk out with a hybrid, because that's what nearly everything is now. The label matters less than three things: how it smells to you, how strong you want it, and what time of day you're using it.

What the labels actually mean

Indica and sativa started as descriptions of how the plant grows: short and bushy versus tall and thin. Over decades of crossbreeding, almost every strain on a dispensary shelf is a mix. When a jar says "indica," it means the grower expects it to feel heavier and calmer. "Sativa" means lighter and more active. "Hybrid" means somewhere in between, and it's most of the menu.

Those expectations are a decent starting point. They are not a guarantee. Two indicas from two growers can feel completely different.

Smell is the best predictor

The compounds that give cannabis its smell, terpenes, are also a big part of how it feels. If a jar smells good to you, there's a good chance it's going to be good for you. Citrus and pine tend to feel brighter. Earthy, sweet and gassy tend to feel heavier. Ask the budtender to open two jars. Pick the one you keep going back to.

THC percentage is strength, not quality

A 22% flower with loud terpenes will beat a 33% flower that smells like nothing, every time. High THC numbers sell jars, but they don't make a strain better, and for a lot of people they make it worse. If you're newer, an 18 to 24% strain is plenty. If you're experienced, you already know what you want.

Time of day is the tie-breaker

Daytime, lean lighter: sativa-leaning hybrids, citrus and pine smells, moderate THC. Evening, lean heavier: indica-leaning hybrids, earthy and sweet smells. That's the whole method. Two jars, smell both, pick the one that fits the hour.

What to say at the counter

You don't need strain names. Say what you're doing after: "something for a walk," "something for a movie," "something to share." That's more useful to a budtender than anything on the label, and it's exactly what our counter is there for.
